Planning a central Manchester wedding? Tips for photography

Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing Dikla and James’ wedding day in central Manchester. They contacted me at quite short notice for a wedding but fortunately I was available. They had decided to have the ceremony at Manchester Register Office with their reception at the stunning Hotel Gotham.

The couple just wanted me to click away, capturing those special candid moments. Following the ceremony we headed back to Hotel Gotham and used a couple of the roof terrace bars, with amazing views of Manchester, for some of their pictures.

A great tip for couples is usually to have a pre-wedding photo shoot to get used to being in front of the camera, how to stand together and get used to smiling. A lot! A few weeks before the day is ideal. In this case that wasn’t possible so it was really refreshing to just see the couple play for the camera, ignore me and enjoying their big day.

The roof terrace was bathed in sunlight all afternoon so shooting with the sun behind them, and using the shade as much as possible, resulted in some great relaxed, casual photographs. The sun behind the couple lights their hair rather than their faces, plus there’s nothing worse than people squinting into the sun in photographs. Talk to any photographer and they will all say they prefer the shade to bright sun. Even the most expensive cameras don’t cope very well with high contrast levels from bright sunshine. The shade gives even skin tones, vital for wedding photography of the bride.

We also used the front of the hotel for the car shot and found a location, in the shade, down the side with a background that fell away down the street and gave a reportage feel. Using a 85mm portrait lens wide open at F/1.4 really blurs out the background, perfect for the side streets of Manchester busy with the public walking past.

In the end Dikla and James were delighted with their wedding pictures and gave me a 5 star Google review.
